in online for the livestream or attending in person. Here&#8217;s a pile of good learning documented by Dan Slee of comms2point0 who compered the event with colleague Darren Caveney.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A good event will make you think a little differently and open up a door to new things.<\/p>\n<p>Such was the case with the eighth annual Granicus event in London in the fabulous RIBA building in Marylebone.<\/p>\n<p>Here are some things I learned:<\/p>\n<p>1.\u00a0 The average income target for a comms team is \u00a375k.<\/p>\n<p>2.\u00a0 Less than 20 per cent of comms teams have an income target.<\/p>\n<p>3.\u00a0 You need to spend a couple of hours with the ICO download\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ico.org.uk\/for-organisations\/data-protection-reform\/overview-of-the-gdpr\/\">HERE<\/a>\u00a0to help you get your head around the changes of GDPR.<\/p>\n<p>4.\u00a0 GDPR isn\u2019t scary. Ignorance of it can make it scary.<\/p>\n<p>5.\u00a0 Having Council generated \u00a318k through ad space in their email bulletins to 160k subscribers.<\/p>\n<p>6.\u00a0 You can tell people anything so long as you are straight.<\/p>\n<p>7.\u00a0 We need to think more about helping comms people after a traumatic event.<\/p>\n<p>8.\u00a0 Give leaders the advice they need not the advice they want.<\/p>\n<p>9.\u00a0 Digital transformation isn\u2019t sticking web lipstick onto an analogue pig.<\/p>\n<p>10.\u00a0 Ask yourself the question: \u2018What have you done to change people\u2019s lives today.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>11.\u00a0 Blank verse is an acceptable way to present.<\/p>\n<p>12.\u00a0 \u2018Get me a tweet,\u2019 is the new \u2018get me a leaflet.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>13.\u00a0 Rebel Uncut are good at live streaming. They were at the first one too.<\/p>\n<p>14.\u00a0 You need to react when the rules are thrown out of the window.<\/p>\n<p>15.\u00a0 There are many myths about GDPR. Some of them\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/iconewsblog.org.uk\/tag\/gdprmyths\/\">have been exploded<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>16.\u00a0 After a Big Thing have a comms debrief then plug what you\u2019ve learned into the wider learning.<\/p>\n<p>17.\u00a0 If you tweet the Met Office asking how the weather is doing in a certain place they\u2019ll tweet you back.<\/p>\n<p>18.\u00a0 The Met Office have become very good at storytelling with their weather data.<\/p>\n<p>19.\u00a0 Always when I write a list of things I learned I think of more after I\u2019ve hit the publish button.<\/p>\n<p>20.\u00a0 Foster relationships in peacetime so you can rely on them in a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>21.\u00a0 Just because it is an emergency doesn\u2019t make it a crisis.<\/p>\n<p>22.\u00a0 The white paper on income targets is really magnificent.
