Thursday, 29 September 2016, GovDelivery held its annual Public Sector Communications conference \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/search?q=%23UKComm16&amp;src=typd\">#UKComm16<\/a><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The day was packed with great talks. You can view all the presentation slides, listen to the recordings and read about the speakers on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\">event page here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll share with you the top 5 thoughts I took away from the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. You can\u2019t have more than three priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People often talk about having so many priorities, they struggle to cope. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/carriebish\">Carrie Bishop<\/a> shared if you have more than three, they are simply not priorities but a wish list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9473\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"3 priorities\" width=\"439\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. We can spend time creating the wrong things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every speaker stressed the importance of understanding user needs and only making changes to improve the customer experience. What was interesting was the awareness that often we try to fix the wrong problem rather than realising some things should not be fixed. This can result in getting the wrong things really efficient, rather than making a solution the user needs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-2-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Efficiency\" width=\"438\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. There is a lot more to the digital skills gap than infrastructure and learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCNeaman\">Rachel Neaman<\/a> shared research done by <a href=\"https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/\">Doteveryone<\/a> that demonstrated areas with great connectivity and infrastructure can still have problems with digital. The digital exclusion challenge is not one isolated issue but a complex problem including many factors including a lack of skills, costs associated with getting online, broadband issues, and a lack of time or motivation. Stop looking at services in sections, there is only one customer journey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We often look at service redesign in sections reflecting parts of a process or internal team structures but the user journey often relies upon many services areas including customer services, communications, digital, IT and publishing. To improve the user journey and overall customer experience, the whole process needs to be looked at through the customer\u2019s perspective and take into consideration every part of the journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9475\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-3.png\" alt=\"Right message\" width=\"438\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. You can view all the presentation slides, listen to the recordings and read about the speakers on the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\">event page here.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In this post, I\u2019ll share with you the top 5 thoughts I took away from the day.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. You can\u2019t have more than three priorities<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>People often talk about having so many priorities, they struggle to cope. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/carriebish\">Carrie Bishop<\/a> shared if you have more than three, they are simply not priorities but a wish list.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9473\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"3 priorities\" width=\"439\" height=\"439\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. We can spend time creating the wrong things<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every speaker stressed the importance of understanding user needs and only making changes to improve the customer experience. What was interesting was the awareness that often we try to fix the wrong problem rather than realising some things should not be fixed. This can result in getting the wrong things really efficient, rather than making a solution the user needs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9474\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-2-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"Efficiency\" width=\"438\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. There is a lot more to the digital skills gap than infrastructure and learning<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RCNeaman\">Rachel Neaman<\/a> shared research done by <a href=\"https:\/\/doteveryone.org.uk\/\">Doteveryone<\/a> that demonstrated areas with great connectivity and infrastructure can still have problems with digital. The digital exclusion challenge is not one isolated issue but a complex problem including many factors including a lack of skills, costs associated with getting online, broadband issues, and a lack of time or motivation. Stop looking at services in sections, there is only one customer journey<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We often look at service redesign in sections reflecting parts of a process or internal team structures but the user journey often relies upon many services areas including customer services, communications, digital, IT and publishing. To improve the user journey and overall customer experience, the whole process needs to be looked at through the customer\u2019s perspective and take into consideration every part of the journey.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/UKcomm16\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-9475\" src=\"http:\/\/www.govdelivery.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/10\/Carrie-3.png\" alt=\"Right message\" width=\"438\" height=\"438\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>5.
